The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international NGO aimed at ensuring forests are responsibly managed. They do so by setting a global standard, which is governed by 10 core principles. This standard is devised with the help of world-respected FSC members like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenpeace.
Virgin paper will always be required, as paper can only be recycled a finite number of times. So it’s important that forests are protected to provide sustainable virgin material.
Trees used are either replanted, or allowed to regenerate naturally.
Harvesting methods ensure habitats and the future growth of the forest is maintained.
Certain parts of forests are protected entirely.
FSC uses a system of inspecting and tracking timber and pulp right through the chain.
Hazardous chemicals are prohibited.
Rights of indigenous people are protected, including certain sacred sites and trees.
Forest owners must employ local workers and provide all necessary training, safety equipment, and a fair wage.
All relevant laws must be respected.
